Add Star Group Inc. to the list. Same stuff (services, website pictures, responds to Careerbuilder posts, etc...) different name.

Wow! I was fooled enough to research it!

Well, here is the latest, I just received my notice about seeing my resume @ monster last week. Seems they have someone that has cleaned things up for them.

There seems to be a new one out there. After I uploaded my resume on CareerBuilder, I received a job offer from David Rivera - very similar to all the above stated - for a company called AIR Group Inc.

The job is for a "financial agent" to process funds via my personal bank account and be paid 2300 per month (to be later raised to 3000/mo) & commissions for only working 2-3 hours per day. You know what they say - if it seems to good to be true - well, you know the rest.

I could not validate the existence of the company, any of the principal officers - nothing. The business location in New York City does not exist in any mapping programs. The phone numbers listed for the NYC location have a 610 area code which is for outside the Philadelphia PA area.
It all smelled too fishy - and I am assuming such - thus keeping far away from them.

Watch out for AIR Group Inc. They give impressive links to their website in the email job offer - and the website looks very official - but that is the only place I have ever found them to exist - only in their own created website. Which looks to have been created only on 8-7-08, but claims existence since 1990.

FYI for those of you who got here through looking up Labean Furniture, I got an e-mail from a woman who thought they may be stealing the identity of a legitimate company, because they gave her a web site address of labean manufacture dot com (spelling it out so they don't get linked).

First, don't visit any web sites in these e-mails unless your browser, operating system, and virus protection are all up to date with the latest patches, and even then you may want to sandbox the browser, because the site is probably going to try to secretly install viruses on your machine. Remember, these people are criminals.

Second, a quick and easy way to check out a site is to go to Godaddy.com and use their "Whois" lookup (if you're on a Mac, just open a unix terminal window and type "whois" followed by a space, then the domain name). You'll get the domain record, including information on when the domain was created. Labean manufacture dot com was created in June of 2008.

It's very coincidental that this domain got registered just a few weeks before these spams started going out. Too coincidental if you ask me.

Dawn,

Most of the job scam e-mails I get are received through e-mail addresses I never registered with any job board. The scammers say they found you through Monster or CareerBuilder because it makes them sound more legitimate, but Monster and CareerBuilder never had anything to do with it.

Just because I say I found you through Monster or CareerBuilder doesn't mean I actually did.

Imagine you send out 2 million spam e-mails. If just 5% of the people who receive them are registered with Monster, then you've hit 100,000 scam candidates. They send these out in those kinds of numbers.

My question is why aren't these job sites like Monster.com, Careerbuilder.com etc. checking out people to insure that their sites provide legitimate job offers? It seems so many of you have uncovered scams with what seems to be little or no trouble, so it doesn't make sense that the job sites couldn't also do this. I get scams like this all the time (the latest being Labean Furniture) and it really ticks me off that legitimate job sites are allowing this to happen when I am trying to receive legitimate job requests. Is this too much to ask?

Within minutes of registering with CareerBuilder, the "unbelievable opportunity" from Labean Furniture dropped into my mailbox. It is a shame that anyone seriously looking for work has to suffer the scams. Thank you for this site to vent and make others aware.

A note for those looking for jobs using accredited employment sites: my wife has just received a mail from Reed UK - professional job-hunters with whom she'd previously registered - advising her of a job opening that matched her criteria.

She went to the advertiser's site, and it seemed fishy: most of the buttons didn't work, and the job application required her to download a program that, according to the site, would perform an 'automated interview'.

(Needless to say, the job was rather too good to be true.)

Turned out the 'automated interview' program was a malware dropper that would have installed a Trojan on her machine.

I checked with Reed's site (www.reed.co.uk), and was amazed to discover that advertising a fake job is horribly simple: anyone can do it for £50, and they guarantee at least ten responses. The job offer is automatically mailed to any registered job-hunter who roughly matches the criteria. Coming from an established employment agency, many job-seekers will no doubt be drawn in, and no doubt many will be suckered into downloading the malware. I assume that the program provides a dummy application form while it does its dirty work.

So - look out, people: a job opportunity from a reputable employment company could hide a nasty surprise. Checks are apparently nonexistent.

I have been hit with the same offers from the Onis Business Group.
What is really frustrating is I have spent hours on the phone with BBB, state Attorney General, Secretary of State, IRS and FTC and got absolutely NO Help. They knew nothing and couldn't suggest anything. I wiul say they person at the FTC Consumer Protection was helpful in saying.. "sounds iffy."
Why do we pay taxes?
