@Justin,

Last I checked, Jesus likes fisherman, but hates homsexuals. Seeing as I'm Jewish, that's neither here nor there for me, but to a lot of Christians, it means that fishermen are doing something natural and pleasing to God while homosexuals are EVIL.

You can't win the argument you're trying to make because it's not an objective argument. It's subjective, and based on your values, and you use phrases like "killing an innocent animal" to try to spin the discussion like a campaign manager after a debate.

The problem is that people get so wrapped up in emotion and ideology that they think they're expressing actual facts rather than personal preferences.

Last time I checked there was a difference between being gay and killing an innocent animal for the fun of it. Terrible, terrible analogy.

While I will agree with your point about bigotry, it seems that you might be walking a fine line. As I read your post, I find sentiment against intolerance purported to be "good" and sentiment supporting intolerance "evil" or "bad." Your case against intolerance becomes intolerant of, well, intolerance.

See, and there's the bias. Fishing (if you're not practicing "catch and release" and do kill the fish) can be called a lot of other things besides "murder." The anti-fishing crowd (like Tracy) use an emotionally charged word to try to characterize it as something wrong and evil.

Then you have the fundamentalists who use emotionally charged language ("sin", "deviant") to describe homosexuality as something wrong and evil.

It's all a bunch of people using semantics to try to make something they don't like be perceived as a tool of the devil that will ruin our nation, threaten family values, etcetera, etcetera. But I'd say phrases like "fishing is murder" are no less propagandist and intolerant than saying "gay marriage will lead to the destruction of the American family."

Honestly, I don't believe either phrase and wouldn't use either one except for purposes of illustration. But whether you're a fundamentalist who hates homosexuality or an animal rights activist who hates fishing, you wrap your intolerance in the flag of being morally justified.

The problem is that given enough time and enough desire, anyone can convince themselves that any cause is morally just.
