So I only post the scams that get through the SpamAssassin on my personal e-mail account or through the spam filters at Gmail or Yahoo mail. This one just got through SpamAssassin. These jerks don't even bother to go to the trouble of inventing a fake company name or backstory, setting up a fake web site, or trying to send the e-mail from a semi-believable fake e-mail address.

Of course, we begin with the absolute dead giveaways... Sent by Ned Looney, signed by Adam Levell, with a reply address at a throwaway gmail address. The sending address is at boynetannumhookup.com.au, a site for an Australian fishing contest. They're sending you this scam with the sender's address at a site for a FISHING CONTEST! It's almost like they're trying to give you clues.

Now some people have posted comments about bad spelling. punctuation, and grammar being giveaways. Sadly, that's not quite true. You do have people working as recruiters in the U.S. for whom English is a second language. You also have the wonderful American educational system which churns out graduates who inspire bloggers to rant about spelling. Can we just have a national "get it straight" day where everyone in the country learns the difference between "then" and "than" or "they're," "their," and "there," please?

But I digress from my point, which is that real, legitimate recruiters occasionally fall victim to crappy spelling and grammar.

Still, the dead giveaways I mention above are more than enough to prove this particular offer is BOGUS. But if they're not, what effing stranger is going to come out of nowhere and offer you a $75 an hour job?

And if you'll get in their van, they'll give you candy.

I've seen the follow-up email from this scam on another site (I went surfing after I received a similar email). The underlying scam is the fake check and wire scam. They send you a check, which you are supposed to deposit. You keep part of the check, then withdraw the rest from your account to wire as a money order and to pay fees for that money order. A few days later, the check bounces since it was fake, and you are out the money that you withdrew. The timing is important, as is the method you are supposed to use to transfer the funds. They send you a check because it will take it a few days to be run through the system. They demand that you send the wire the same day as you cash the check. The wire can't be refunded, as there is little control over checking to see who really received the wire.
