Why Does Chrome Keep Asking For The Java Plugin?
Posted by Greg Bulmash in Techno ThoughtsI'm learning a little about Java development for a project at work and went to update my copy of Java to the latest version (7u5). Strangely, once I did, Google Chrome would not run Java applets. It told me that I needed to install the Java plugin, which basically required reinstalling Java.
I tried it. Didn't work.
I tried making sure all versions of Java were uninstalled and the latest was reinstalled. Didn't work.
I tried disabling all of my plugins except Java. Didn't work.
I tried disabling all of my extensions. Didn't work.
Despite this, Java would run fine on IE or Firefox. Finally I found a post where someone pointed out that Java installs a separate program called "JavaFX 2.1.1" alongside Java and suggested uninstalling just that. I went into the control panel, programs panel, and right alongside Java, there was a separate install of JavaFX 2.1.1. So I uninstalled it.
TA-DA, problem fixed... at least for now. JavaFX is apparently used for enabling some Java-based browser and desktop apps. I do not know of any apps on my system that have JavaFX as a dependency, so I'll leave it off for now.
Hope this helps someone who was running into the same issue.
